Frans Oerder was an artist who fell in love with South Africa and used its vast and diverse landscape as his subject. Oerder was not only an influential figure in the South African art scene but also a famous artist in Europe and other countries. Like many of his counterparts in the same era, Oerder’s favourite theme was landscapes and rural life. Oerder’s contributions towards the South African art scene and his subsequent efforts towards the development of its art world are invaluable.
Life history of Frans Oerder
Frans David Oerder was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1867. He was one of the 7 children of his parents. Oerder’s interest in drawing began at a very young age and he dreamt of pursuing a career in art. But his father, a pragmatic man, stood sternly against the wishes of his son. Later, Oerder was allowed to join a course in Decorating at the Rotterdam Academy of Art. Oerder proved to be a good student. During his course from 1880 to 1885, he won the ‘King William III Gold Medal and Bursary’. After the graduation, Oerder toured Italy, and spent some time in Brussels studying under Ernest Blanc-Garin.
Oerder followed the footsteps of his brother and reached South Africa in 1890. He had a humble beginning in the country working as a house-painter for the firm De Wyn & Engelenburg. He left the job in 1894 to become an art teacher at the Staatsmeisjesskool (Pretoria High School for Girls). During this time, Frans Oerder began to draw cartoons for local Newspapers. Renting a studio for painting made him come in contact with several of the contemporary artists in the South African art world. One of them was the sculptor Anton Van Wauw who soon became Oerder’s friend. Pierneef, a student of Oerder who frequently visited the studio, would become a great artist himself later in life.
It was in 1896, after a tour to Zululand which inspired him to create great art work that Oerder arranged his first exhibition. Oerder’s work was so impressive that 1899 when the Anglo-Boer war erupted, President Paul Kruger appointed him as the official war painter. Oerder completed the job successfully and the paintings are still displayed at the war museum in Bloemfontein, the Africana Museum in Johannesburg and the art collection of the University of Pretoria. Later, he went on a journey to the East African Coast and captured the beautiful landscapes there on to his canvas. Oerder was being showered with recognition at this time and he even received an assignment to paint a portrait of General Louis Botha.
The post war South African environment did not really suit artists. So, after spending 18 years in South Africa, Oerder returned to Netherlands in 1908. He married a fellow artist, Gerda Pitlo in 1910, in Amsterdam. It was Gerda Pitlo who turned Oerder’s attention to painting flowers. Oerder enthusiastically followed his new passion and painted many still life pictures with flowers. Oerder was catapulted into international fame when his painting ‘Magnolias’ was sold to the New York Graphic Society.
After achieving wide acclaim and recognition for his work, Oerder eventually returned to South Africa in 1938. He settled down in Pretoria and completed several of his famous works there. Frans Oerder died in Pretoria in 1944 due to complications arising from Pneumonia.
Frans Oerder effectively captured the color and light of landscapes in his paintings. He was particularly fond of the Transvaal landscape and made it a subject in several of his paintings. Due to his Dutch origins, he was also interested in Dutch realistic painting and worked on portraits, still life and flower pieces. Frans Oerder, though an outsider, will always be remembered in history as a pioneer in South African art.
